The growing city of Conroe Texas sits 40 miles north of Houston. The city population has grown from just 36,811 to 61,533 in the past three years. The city sits on 37 square miles of both land and water.
The city is home to its own lake that brings many people into the town because of its year round water and cultural events. Only a small portion of Lake Conroe is located in the city. The lake is seven miles southeast of Conroe and extends about 21 miles over 20,118 acres of land. Lake Conroe was built as an alternative water supply for the city of Houston.
Conroe had always been a small town until the construction of Interstate 45 began. When the highway was completed in the late 1970’s, more and more residents of Houston began to settle in Conroe. The population grew over 53% in just a few years.
The city developed many schools and its own school district to serve the new residents in the area. The city has over 30 public elementary and middle schools that serve the Conroe Independent School District. The district employs many of the city’s residents as well. Around 5,915 Conroe residents serve the 48,700 students in the district.
